    Abstract

A novel ultrasonically-actuated tool has been designed and fabricated to allow safe and deliberate surgical incision. Though the tool has been designed specifically for ultrasonic cutting of tissues, modifications to its structure and material properties may lead to its use in other medical applications. The design comprises a simple geometry with sharp tip and utilises a length thickness extensional (LTE) mode sample of the new single crystal piezoelectric material, PMN-PT, to generate longitudinal motion with velocity > 120 mm/s at 80 kHz. The paper details the design and characterisation process of the tool including the necessary electrical circuitry required to achieve the optimum results.
