note = "The award of an £11,000 Creative Development Grant by the Scottish Arts Council, enabled research into new jewellery design techniques and processes and a deeper creative engagement with narrative traditions. This involved working with three storytellers from the Highlands of Scotland, selected on the basis of the varied folklore traditions they represent, Tom Mabon, Evelyn Pottie and Jonathan Shearer. Working with the storytellers resulted in a documentation of their narratives that were captured through recordings, written text and drawings. This was used as source material for a new body of work that had the explicit intention of providing a contemporary interpretation of Highland culture. The aim was to reawaken these ancient tales and find them a place in today{\textquoteright}s modern world. The exhibition at the Castle Gallery in Inverness was part of 'The Highland Year of Culture'. Interest has been shown by the Winnipeg Art Gallery in a possible exhibition. The continuing trajectory of this research is to develop innovative and appropriate working practices that more effectively bridge narrative and craft. Increasingly these explore aspects of Scottish cultural traditions as a means of both connecting them to contemporary culture and, in particular, to audiences outside of Scotland. There is an implicit view driving this practice that contemporary crafts can play a vital role in projecting a modern distinctive identity for Scotland throughout the world dc.description.sponsorship: Scottish Arts Council; Highland Fringe exhibition ; Conference date: 08-09-2007 Through 29-09-2007",
