Abstract
"House of an Architect" was presented at the Telling Stories: Objects & Narrative conference at Loughborough University School of Art and Design on 21 Sept 2007 and was the third and final Telling Stories symposia. "House of an Architect" explores the creation of narratives linked to home / house and to architecture and the domestic interior focussing on two case studies of Sir John Soanes Museum and the fictional narratives that drove the experimental dwellings of Douglas Darden and his"Oxygen House" and his 'House for Dying In". 'Objects and Narrative' explores the possibilities of narrative in relation to particular objects or collections. Fashioned or found, the object maintains its status as a familiar trope within contemporary practice. Things may be located and dislocated, devalued and revalued; whether as souvenirs, keepsakes or kitsch, objects reference memory, nostalgia and identity. The 'situated' or 'contingent' object conveys the particularities of place, culture and time.
