Abstract

‘Caressing the marble and stone’ is an ongoing transformation-based project. It is an artist book in flux which will see me remake and transform the book as different iterations. The book’s title is a line from a Joy Division song which relates to content of the essay and the formation of the project.

This artist book collages selected lines from four texts into one voice. The one voice blurs WW1 clay tunnelling techniques with the clay-based spells of Isobel Gowdie and Janet Breadhead. The spaces where these clay-based processes are carried out are imagined through lines extracted from Foucault's Heterotopias writings and Lucky's speech from 'Waiting for Godot'. The book’s three chapters ‘Leaves’, ‘Pikes’ and ‘Spades’ also point to these objects and spaces of conflict as they reference the spade suit within playing card decks and the deck’s transformation from its origins as ‘Leaves’ (German) to ‘Pikes’ (French) to ‘Spades’ (British).
