Abstract
Exhibition Venue: Drawing Projects UK, Bridge House, Trowbridge, UK
Exhibition Dates: 4th June - 6th August
Drawing Projects UK, presented the exhibition - Iain R. Webb - DRAWING FASHION: sketchbooks from the edge of the catwalk - from 4 June to 6 August 2022. As Director of Drawing Projects UK, Anita Taylor's curatorial vision was instrumental to the programming of this solo exhibition of a selection of Iain R. Webb's sketchbooks that explored the role of drawing as a form of note-taking for fashion journalism.
Throughout Iain R. Webb's longstanding and influential career in the fashion industry, he has drawn from the edge of the catwalk as a form of note-taking. These sketchbooks on show form a significant visual record of the vast number of influential fashion shows covered by Iain R. Webb, and feature his notational drawings of the collections of ground-breaking fashion designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Miuccia Prada, Comme des Garcons, and many more, as they were first revealed on the season's catwalks. The exhibition provides an insight into the fashion industry and forms a record of the last four decades of fashion history. Celebrating drawing as a means of recording, remembering, and communicating, sits at the heart of this exhibition which, simultaneously, celebrates and reveals the workings of the fashion industry.
The exhibition comprised the presentation of 26 sketchbooks, ephemera and archival material and documentation. It was accompanied by an illustrated newsprint publication, featuring texts by Taylor, Iain R. Webb, Susannah Franckel, Editor-in-Chief of AnOther Magazine, Sophie McKinlay, Head of Programme at V&A Dundee, and designed by Simon Cryer of Northbank Design, published by Drawing Projects UK (ISBN: 978-1-9999936-4-1). The exhibition and publication project was supported by a grant from the British Fashion Council with additional support from Kingston University (where Webb is Professor of Fashion & Design), the University of Dundee, and Drawing Projects UK. A public programme that included the local John of Gaunt School ran alongside the exhibition.
