    Abstract

    The document provides policy guidance on how to further use Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans and, particularly, the Protocols for the protection of the marine environment from land-based activities (LBSA Protocols) to strengthen the implementation of the GPA (Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities) at the regional and national levels. It : - provides a general overview of the current status of the Regional Seas Conventions, Action Plans and Protocols; - elaborates on the current regional implementation of the GPA within and outside the framework of regional seas conventions, action plans and protocols - looks at the current status of adoption, ratification and implementation of the LBSA Protocols as well as those that are being developed - looks at he specific issues of the LBSA protocols that are in line with the GPA and are mutually reinforcing; as well as those GPA aspects that are not being addressed by LBSA Protocols - discusses advantages and disadvantages of the LBSA Protocols to advance the implementation of the GPA. © UNEP
