Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingForeword/postscript

Abstract

This introductory chapter provides a comprehensive overview of developmental dyslexia in adulthood, combining theoretical, clinical and research perspectives. It begins by defining developmental dyslexia, highlighting its cognitive, linguistic and neurobiological foundations, as well as the challenges involved in establishing consistent diagnostic criteria. Particular attention is paid to adults with dyslexia in higher education, discussing prevalence, academic and social challenges and the compensatory mechanisms that may contribute to their success. The chapter also offers a typology of research on adult dyslexia conducted between 2000 and 2024, identifying major themes, trends and gaps in the scientific literature. Finally, the structure and content of the book are presented, outlining how the subsequent chapters address key issues in understanding, identifying and supporting adults with dyslexia, while engaging with current debates and future directions in the field.
