N1 - This project explores the legacy of the Jacobite Risings of 1715 and 1745. The research will lead to a body of artworks exploring this defining moment in Scottish history. A basis of constructed stage-sets, composed from objects and artefacts relating to the subject, will be painted with imagery alluding to the matrix of meanings embedded in this iconic historical period. The photographs will generate a nuanced semiotics of the key moments
and wider myth of the Stuart dynasty: an open-ended series of references, of riddles and puzzles, of ‘facts’ and beliefs that connote the multifaceted legacy of the Jacobite Rising.
This exhibition proposes to utilise new processes of digital photographic presentation to create a series of diverse photographic works arranged as a form of intervention within the Collection on display in the SNPG Jacobite
Gallery (augmented by strategic loans from Highland Region). These will include the rarefied and the popular paraphernalia of the Jacobite legacy; so utilising popular imagery, glass and ceramic objects, intriguing optical
devices, and, the repository of ephemera that reference the secret history of the Jacobite cause. The photographs will explore the evolution of mythologized and factual representations of the Jacobites as developed over the last three hundred years, and re-evaluate their import and influence in contemporary Scotland.

N2 - This new body of work investigates the traces of Jacobite material culture, portraiture and visual illusion to be found in Scottish museums up and down the country. It takes a fresh look at this material culture with a view to re-interpret the matrix of symbols and allusions that they carry and, through a range of different types of contemporary making, bring them into the digital age. The works are contrasted with the existing collection in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and question the role of this familiar iconography in Scottish national culture.
