‘La voz de los martillos: técnicas precolombinas en uso’ es el resultado de la investigación de Emilia Ferraro PhD. y de la colaboración científica y educativa entre el Duncan F Jordanstone College of Arts and Design (DJCAD) de la Universidad de Dundee, el programa ‘Conocimientos Materiales en Desaparición’ (EMKP) del Museo Británico y el Museo Casa del Alabado.

Los saberes, técnicas y prácticas que configuraron la temprana metalurgia precolombina, continúan circulando a través de artesanos que reinterpretan las creaciones del pasado. Gabriela Andrade, Fernando Buitrón y Germán Campos, renombrados maestros y maestras de tres talleres orfebres de Quito, y Sandra Wilson, investigadora y artesana escocesa, retomaron técnicas de origen prehispánico e influencias españolas, concibiendo su arte como un conjunto de conocimientos únicos, basados en la cosmovisión andina ancestral, así como en la historia de los metales en este territorio. En particular, la técnica del embutido que implica martillar desde adentro, una técnica única que define la orfebrería ecuatoriana y la resalta en el panorama mundial.

Se trató de un proceso de documentación, investigación, y accesibilidad a sistemas de conocimiento asociados con la creación, uso, reparación y reutilización de objetos materiales, espacios, arquitectura, actuaciones y entornos. Entre 2022 y 2024, se filmaron las técnicas principales, los diseños, los materiales y las herramientas usadas en la orfebrería ecuatoriana en tres talleres de Quito. Las piezas expuestas, junto a sus referencias materiales en el arte prehispánico y registros digitales, forman parte de los repositorios del Museo Británico en Londres y del Museo de Arte Precolombino Casa del Alabado en Quito.

'The voice of the hammers: pre-Columbian techniques in use' is the result of the research of Emilia Ferraro PhD. and a scientific and educational collaboration between the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Arts and Design (DJCAD- University of Dundee), the 'Endangered Material Knowledge' Program (EMKP) of the British Museum and the “Casa del Alabado” Museum of pre-Columbian Art.
The knowledge, techniques and practices that shaped early pre-Columbian metallurgy continue to circulate through artisans who reinterpret the creations of the past. Gabriela Andrade, Fernando Buitrón and Germán Campos, renowned masters of three goldsmith workshops in Quito, and Sandra Wilson, professor hemerita of Ecological Metal Design at DJCAD and Scottish silversmith, took up techniques of pre-Hispanic origins and Spanish influences, conceiving their art as a set of unique knowledge, based on the ancestral Andean worldview, as well as on the history of metals in this territory. In particular, the technique of embutido of raising vessels by hammering from the inside, is a unique technique that defines Ecuadorian goldsmithing and highlights it on the international silversmithing stage.

This is a process of documentation, research, and accessibility to knowledge systems associated with the creation, use, repair and reuse of material objects, spaces, architecture, performances and environments. Between 2022 and 2024, the main techniques, designs, materials and tools used in Ecuadorian goldsmithing were filmed in three workshops in Quito by the EMKP-funded research team led by Emilia Ferraro (DJCAD). The pieces on display, along with their material references in pre-Hispanic art and digital records, are part of the repositories of the British Museum in London and the Casa del Alabado Museum of Pre-Columbian Art in Quito.
