    Abstract

Laboratory data are presented on the trajectories of buoyant jets discharged into shallow cross-flows. A characteristic length scale L(s) = {z(M)[(B-0)(2)/(M(0)(3))](n)}(1/(1-4n)) is proposed for such cases, in terms of z(M) (the momentum length scale), and M(0) and B-0, the source momentum and buoyancy fluxes respectively, The index n is determined empirically to have a value of -0.15 +/- 0.05 for shallow water cases, and comparisons with previous results confirm the validity of the L(s) scaling for deep water conditions.
