Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

On a daily basis, the General Practice Nurse is required to make highly complex care decisions which necessitate working within legal, ethical and professional frameworks to ensure quality outcomes for the patients they care for, their employers and wider society are met. This chapter aims to build on General Practice Nurse core knowledge of ethical practice and values (Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) 2018) by discussing the legal frameworks governing and informing the delivery of health and social care within the UK. The role of the General Practice Nurse (GPN) and the challenges associated with powerful relationships, autonomy, ethical decision-making, advocacy and accountability will also be discussed. In concluding, this chapter will discuss the Royal College of General Practitioners and Royal College of Nursing (2015) General Practice Nurse competencies and the Queen’s Nursing Institute/Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland (2017) voluntary Standards for General Practice.
