David Faithfull's Leviathan f5 is a double-sided concertina Artists Book, originally created in gauche and oak gall ink. On one side is a 360° panoramic view of the horizon form the north end of Iona, showing the Isle of Inch Kenneth, the subject of the prequel Artists Book Leviathan f3, amongst an archipelago of islets and sea loch openings. On the reverse are drawings of a series of cedar and blackthorn reliquaries, carved during specific walks within the depicted island landscape.
Leviathan f5 was originally created for the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Pilgrimage exhibition in St Triduan’s Chapel with Artists Collective 6°W. There it was presented unfolded around a central 6 pillar column in the Chapel together with 7 cedar and blackthorn relics. The laser-cut cedar wood cover, the traditional wood of reliquaries, relates to St Triduana as the Patron Saint of Sight and the artist’s mother who was losing her sight during its creation. The cedar wood was sourced from a tree in her garden and additionally reveals the growth rings of the years shared between her and her son.
Leviathan f5 is in an edition of 25 giclée and laser cut cedar wood copies ISBN 978-1-900599-36-8
