author = "Thomas Deckker",
note = "The Magalhaes House is a large private house in Brasilia. In this house Deckker defined a new typology for suburban houses in this quintessentially Modern city, and experimented with environmentally responsive and sustainable construction, figuration and landscape design. The plan form defines transitions from public to private, through entrance courtyard, entrance hall, reception rooms, to the bedrooms. The entrance hall contains a figurative wall defining movement around the house. The ground floor and garden constitute a single landscape space with interactions betweeen interior and exterior space. The envelope employs new technologies to successfully control temperature and ventilation. This house is used as a teaching resource by the Centro de Ensino Universitario de Brasilia as an exemplar of contemporary architecture in the city. dc.isbasedon: Elden Croy, 'Foreign Legion', in RIBA Journal March 2002, ISSN 1463-9505, pp 42-6 'Thomas Deckker: Two Projects in Brasilia' RIBA Gallery 2 13-30 October 2003; 'New Architecture in Brazil: photographs by Michael Frantzis' Brazilian Embassy, London 5-6 March 2003.
