Abstract
Eardley’s pull to observe and comprehend our actuality via the painted mark provides new perspectives into her contribution to paintings’ importance in addressing the complexities of contemporary life. Discovering Eardley and seeking parallels with her own practice, artist lecturer, Alex Roberts briefly highlighted how painting as a slower medium, with personal reflective affect offers the viewer to reconsider directly, mediating reality. Introducing, how it pauses time for the viewer (and requires more of the painter) to decipher the haziness of modern life, the core of disposition, and our existence within time and space. Not didactically but as painting continually embraces its role of (re-) looking, as Eardley’s energetic commitment to candid perception demonstrates.
Supported by comparisons of a few, former heavyweight artists’ work, and their socially observed perspectives alongside Eardley and Alex’s work, Alex will reveal how painting can be provocative, sincere, critical, and sentimental. Noting that as a medium, it carries, is imbedded with, and bears witness to the intimacy of human touch.

Other | Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (the University of Dundee) will present Joan Eardley has she has never been seen before, bringing new and vibrant conversations to an oeuvre of work created between 1940-1963. With a focus on the work created at nearby Catterline, Eardley’s evolving legacy has inspired a new generation of artists to create work through film, installation, textiles and paint. Join some of Scotland’s top art students as they prepare for their degree shows, presenting their thoughts on Eardley’s work and how it relates to their own practices. At the end of the conference, we’ll host an online (kahoot) prize quiz on Joan Eardley’s life and works, and the prize will be sent out to the winner(s) in the post. The event is organised by INGEAR at DJCAD (Intersectional Gender Equality in the Arts Research), supporting marginalised artists and promoting better equalities in the artworld. |
