title = "Normality is obscene nowadays",
author = "Edwin Janssen and Tracy Mackenna",
note = "Normality is obscene nowadays{\textquoteright} was an exhibition of wall paintings, drawings and text blankets produced in collaboration with Tracy Mackenna. Drawings and wall paintings, each a combination of image and text, explore issues relevant to their practice such as: language, identity, social interaction, belonging and territory. The texts {\textquoteleft}I should be at home{\textquoteright}, {\textquoteleft}I put my name on everything{\textquoteright} and {\textquoteleft}Differences under the skin{\textquoteright} are of a far more personal nature than the large-scale projects they derive from. Drawings were also shown in the solo exhibition: {\textquoteleft}A Perfect Image of Ourselves{\textquoteright}, Mirta Demare Gallery, Rotterdam, Netherlands, 2003. The wall painting {\textquoteleft}War as Ever!{\textquoteright} from this exhibition is part of an ongoing series based on a poster made by John Lennon and Yoko Ono for their peace campaign of the early {\textquoteleft}70{\textquoteright}s, which addresses a wide range of social, political and cultural issues. This work was shown in combination with two other wall paintings from the same series for the group exhibition {\textquoteleft}Festival Connections{\textquoteright}, Royal Scottish Academy Edinburgh, 2005. The text blankets are the result of a series of interactive projects that brought together research and audience participation, in public, and focussed on the production of useable artworks. Each project addressed a specific question and visitors{\textquoteright} opinions were gathered through structured conversations. In a temporary purpose-built public studio the textual findings were transformed into text blankets that became a collective reflection on the chosen subject matter. Before going on public display these blankets were used by participating visitors. Drawing, {\textquoteleft}A perfect image of ourselves{\textquoteright} and the wall painting {\textquoteleft}War as Ever!{\textquoteright} were published in related monograph, 'A Perfect Image of Ourselves', CCA Glasgow, November 2005, (ISBN 1-873331-29-0).
