Novel Non-Local Modelling for Cell-Cell Adhesion Processes in Collective Cell Population Movement (Keynote Speaker Talk)

Research output: Contribution to conference › Paper

Abstract

Collective cell population motility stays at the hearts of many important processes in human body, notably in wound healing and cancer progression, and involve a cascade of interlinked processes at both single and multiple spatial and temporal scales. One of the key processes contributing to collective cell motility is the directed movement triggered by calcium mediate cell-adhesion interactions, which involve of a combination of two sub-processes namely, cell – cell adhesion and cell – matrix adhesion.

Despite the advances recorded in characterising these sub-processes over the past two decades, both cell-cell adhesion and cell-matrix adhesion require renewed mathematical modelling efforts for deciphering their underlying mechanisms under complex tissue conditions.

In this work we focus our attention on cell-cell adhesion in the context of both standard diffusion and cross-diffusion, for which we propose and derive scratch a novel non-local modelling approach by which we address the cross-talk-type interactions between the cells on a given sensing region. The analytical derivation is accompanied by a finite volume computational implementation and relevant numerical examples.
