    Abstract

We analyze a one-dimensional mechanical model which has been proposed to account for the pattern formation which arises in various processes in developmental biology. We compare the effect that different constitutive equations have on the resulting spatial pattern. In this way, we conclude that a more detailed knowledge of the mechanical properties of tissues is need if accurate predictions of developing spatial patterns are to be made.
