note = "This exhibition, of 27 oil paintings on canvas made between 2001 and 2006, was mainly concerned with depictions of items of food (vegetables and fast-food) each isolated in a dark field. These were complemented by two paintings of small birds, each held by a gold chain, again emerging from a dark background. The exhibition drew on Guild's ongoing research into still-life painting as a genre in which, tradionally, questions about reality, 'realism' and painting itself are often raised with the greatest intensity, in conjunction with meditations on work, fate, death and transience. More particularly, these new paintings exist stylistically in a dialogue with 16th century Spanish still-life painting, such as Cotan's, in which meticuluous realism evokes a sense of existential mystery. The publication that accompanies the exhibition is 'Derrick Guild: Pre-Asension', published by Allan Stone Gallery; 32 pp., hardback, 16 colour illustrations, essay by Dr. Jonathan Blackwood.
