Abstract

This chapter aims to present the guiding principles of participatory research in view of its application in the context of professional practice of health promotion for vulnerable and marginalized populations.

The text focuses on the following questions: what is the relevance of the participatory research method? To what extent does this approach provide answers to the contemporary problems and practices? What are the theoretical-conceptual principles of this method? What methodological resources and practical strategies can be used to collect data? As a final debate, we highlight: 1. The importance of recognizing the different types of knowledge during the research and intervention processes with excluded groups; 2. Multidisciplinary research and cross sector partnerships are essential elements to achieve a broad and diverse participation and 3. The commitment of the researcher with social change and the production of knowledge that is collectively constructed to answer the current questions and problems of the society, becomes paramount in this perspective.
