Abstract

This chapter presents the experience of the Escape Routes programme which was developed to support youngsters involved in drug gangs to follow new ways in their lives. The article explores the factors for the connection between drugs misuse and gang engagement. Based in 3 years of direct intervention with 130 young gangsters, and an extensive network involving a wide range of actors and partners, the article brings out some findings and learnt lessons through a systematic explanation of methods and strategies adopted. It is expected this article provide knowledge based on empirical evidences to support practitioners and policy makers in Brazil and other countries.
