N1 - The REMOTE exhibition and symposia resulted from a series of residencies during the summer of 2002 for artists working with new technologies in the Highlands of Scotland, responding to either the physical or social environments they encountered. The project was developed by Fildes and McPherson in collaboration with New Media Scotland. The other artists involved were Radioqualia, Craighead & Thomson, and Cavan Convery. Fildes and McPherson created 3 works 'If I follow you, do we make a path?’, a slow motion composite journey along ‘the most dangerous road in Britain’ in which obvious traces of human activity have been either edited out or marked for improvement. In exploring the idea of the Scottish landscape as an entity, constructed to fulfill the on-going need – local, national and international - for an idyllic rural wilderness, the artists wanted to draw attention to the fact that, by labelling an environment and trying to make it fulfill certain expectations, we are in danger of over-looking the ever-evolving shape and dynamic of that environment and the people who inhabit it. 'blind summit/hidden dip' (Wood, copper wire, door bell. 60cm x 30cm x 25cm) An interactive sound sculpture based on a 3D representation of the A889 road and inspired by the classic fairground game ‘Wonky Wire’. ‘Grid Reference’ (Plastic 2m x 25cm) Fragments of car number-plates found along the A889. 2 symposia were set up to discuss the outcomes of the ‘REMOTE’ residency where the artists presented their work at Iona Gallery Kingussie 16th November 2002 chaired by Dr Anna Paterson of St Andrews University, and at Fruitmarket Gallery Edinburgh. 18th November 2002. Chaired by Sarah Cook, University of Sunderland. Also speaking were Sean Cubitt and Lev Manovich.
