Scavengers and Gleaners: Supporting 2nd year Fine Art Students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Not Knowing through theory and practice

Abstract

The interpretative and interactive epistemology of Art is complex and therefore how knowledge is gained through learning and teaching Art can be somewhat mystifying. In order to address this, I have found naming and exploring ‘not knowing’ can be reassuring and enlightening for students. This has been approached by leading seminars and lectures examining texts from On Not Knowing: How Artists Think (eds. Fisher and Fortnum, 2013) and engaging with not knowing through research-led workshops that explore improvisation and material experimentation. These workshops look at how artists use junk materials in times of great precarity.
