note = "Shotgun Wedding{\textquoteright} was made in collaboration with Tracy Mackenna, and addressed the various conflicts that run through the history of Scotland and Britain, through re-presenting visual material relevant to the Union. A selection of paintings, drawings, and engravings from the National Galleries of Scotland's collection, including depictions of the key figures and events, was filmed to produce six projections, which showed the relevance of the Union in both its historical and contemporary context. Further material was sourced in collections and archives in Britain and the Netherlands. Close-up filming and the creation of filmic juxtapositions emphasised the pictorial and visual qualities of artefacts rather than their historical and informative status. The exhibition of this work correlated with the tri-centennial of the signing of the Treaty of Union that joined Scotland and England, and was the year that the Scottish people elected for the first time a Nationalist as their First Minister. During the research and development stage we collaborated with Christopher A. Whatley, Professor of Scottish History, Dundee University. Whatley{\textquoteright}s book {\textquoteleft}The Scots and the Union{\textquoteright} (Edinburgh University Press, 2006) takes a broad-based, long-term approach to union. The publication {\textquoteleft}Tracy Mackenna and Edwin Janssen, Shotgun Wedding{\textquoteright} explores the social, political and cultural background to the video installation {\textquoteleft}Shotgun Wedding{\textquoteright}.
