Abstract
Exhibition Dates: 6-22 October 2023
Venue: Halle au Blé Alençon, France
Exhibition, Halle au Blé Alençon, France. Commissioned by Les Bains Douches, funded by la ville d’Alençon, département de l’Orne, Drac Normandie, Fluxus Art Projects, Creative Scotland, Dundee University
An exhibition of new work which staged a surprising intervention in the cavernous 19th century La Halle au Blé. For audiences Six Scenes was a series of encounters, wry and amusing tableau which appear to be drawings come to life that they were able to walk amongst. For this project, curated by Sophie Vinet, the decision to pick an unusual location in the city instead of Les Bains Douches shaped the concept for the project as well as aligning with my interest in engaging with the widest possible audience. In recent exhibitions, at the Holburne Museum, Bath (UK) for example, ambitious installations have taken the form of interventions inside and outside the space. Created in response to La Halle au Blé, Six Scenes, was a narrative about a hapless collector and an equally hapless (or ruthless?) gallery owner. We see the collector in his apartment, a scene in an art fair, at a museum, at the butchers, at a jewellery shop. In each instance things don't seem to be going very well. Perhaps the collector hasn't received the best advice. Perhaps the gallery owner is equally befuddled. Has the collecting habit caused the collector to close his shop? This exhibition was the first collaboration oration between Les Bains Douches and the city using the venue to stage a new commission for contemporary art. The exhibition included innovative use of commercial print and CNC machining to generate the illusion of large an substantial facades and bulky sculptures rapidly.
The project was funded by numerous partners and I was made a Fluxus Art Projects laureate for the project. The exhibition will included a free fanzine distributed by la ville d’Alençon (1000 copies). The show had 2950 visitors.
There were workshops run in the space for local schools which amounted to 450 visitors
