N2 - In Scotland, children in the age range birth to 5 years experience a range of informal and formal learning opportunities in the home and other settings. These settings typically include parent and toddler groups, playgroups, nurseries (schools and classes), and family centers (Scottish Offi ce, 1999). The importance of early years provision has been recognized by the present Scottish Government (Scottish Government, 2008a; Scottish Government, 2008b; Scottish Government 2008c; Scottish Government, 2008d) and, previously, by the Scottish Executive (Scottish Executive, 2002).
