Roberts’s Knowing XI, 2023 (watercolour & pencil on translucent paper) is part of the exhibited scaffold. “Featuring works by more than 40 artists—including Bale Creek Allen, Ghada Amer/Reza Farkhondeh, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Guy Ben-Ner, Joseph Beuys, Sanford Biggers, Caroline Carlsmith, Alejandro Contreras, William Cordova, Aurélien Couput, Jeremy Deller, Mark Dion, Rafael Domenech, Fab 5 Freddy, Guerrilla Girls, Baris Gokturk, Cash For Your Warhol, Arturo Herrera, Alfredo Jaar, Sonia Kahn, William Kentridge, Dr. Lakra, Dinh Q. Lê, Barry Le Va, Jonas Mekas, Gean Moreno, Jennifer Nuss, Kambui Olujimi, Sigmar Polke, Lee Quinones, Emanuel Ri, Alex Roberts, Dieter Roth, Dennis Scholl, Dana Schutz, Amy Silman, Luis Silva, Kiki Smith, Sarah Sze, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Christy Titus, Wang Xu, Tomas Vu, Tommy White, Beau Willimon, and Sun Xu—the exhibition unites a diverse group of voices committed to resisting mainstream cultural production and the contemporary phenomenon of hyper-representation”. Drawing is central to the exhibition, “celebrated not merely as a medium but as architecture for thought—a fluid, residual, and mobile framework for revolutionary ideas. The works, which move across the mediums of print, photography, video, and works on paper, offer up radical potential and a space where spontaneity and intent converge. Artworks are displayed unframed, on cardboard, on wooden hanging structures, evoking immediacy and impermanence while referencing Lina Bo Bardi’s iconic Easels of Glass. “By discarding walls and traditional frames, the exhibition disrupts the chronological constraints of conventional exhibition design, allowing the works to exist dynamically and non-linearly.” The curation bypassing any preoccupation of art world hierarchies. Roberts’s artwork presents painting/drawing engagement; societal and cultural impact alongside the likes of Sigmar Polke’s print.
