Abstract

Mythology and available archeological evidence reveal that in primitive times, humankind lived in harmony with Nature. The advent of enlightenment and subsequent revolution in science and technology promoted instrumental rationality. Consequent to this revolution, the capitalist system of economic production flourished. To develop capitalism to the optimum, consumerism was prescribed as the essential ideological superstructure for society. Capitalist production has been plundering natural resources for the last three centuries. Now, Nature has started retaliating and this is being manifested in climate change, chemical hazards, health risks, and a large number of avoidable deaths. The plundering of nature is the result of a change in humans’ relationship with Nature. For a sustainable future, harmony with Nature has to be re-learned.
