Technical, Environmental and Aesthetic Benefits of Utilising Recovered Printer Toner in Construction

Abstract

Results of a project is reported to determine the suitability of transferring technology developed in the laboratory to practice, namely the use of recovered toner powder (RTP) from the printing industry into the precast concrete industry to enhance waterproofing properties of products and provide an alternative environmentally friendly source of pigments. RTP is extracted from spent cartridges. This material in not suitable to be refilled into new cartridges any more for various technical reasons, but remains an excellent colouring material for use for example in the construction sector. A technology developed at the University of Dundee by the authors enables such application in typically aqueous systems like fresh mortar or concrete.
The project undertook a review of pigmented and waterproof concrete markets, assessment of the commercial scenarios and alternative products and applications which allowed trial work with an industrial partner to focus on particular concrete products and prove the concept for the supply chain and circular economy within Scotland and the wider UK. The work was then underpinned by feasibility trials to examine i) inclusion of RTP in their mixing/production processes and ii) the performance of products with RTP inclusion (e.g. engineering properties, water ingress and colour matching/fastness tests).
