N1 - Exhibition involved designing fabrics and garments for a series of six outfits, 'The Bremen Collection 2003' that portrayed the city of Bremen in colloboration with Mackenna. Research focused on the history of fashion, Bremen’s past as a Hanseatic trading city and its contemporary activity as a centre for aeronautics and space travel industry. As in many cities with an influential history the future of Bremen is framed through a series of projected ideas that do not grow organically but are the result of a political and economic need to redefine its identity. Six models became the vehicles that enabled dissemination, clothes worn in the city during a series of unscheduled appearances. The lack of announcements and the casual air that the wearers adopted allowed them to mingle with the public in a non-confrontational manner and enabled the work to be a catalyst for conversation about the nature of the city. In some of the outfits the, sometimes uneasy, juxtaposition of garments disassociated the clothes from fashion. The ‘Zükunft Soldat’ for example was contentious in its direct reference to the city’s national socialist past, reinforced by the oddity of the half-man, half-boy sizing. Publication: 'Niemand ist eine Insel, Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst' and The Lichthaus Plus Neue Kunst, Bremen, Germany, 2004 (ISBN 3-937577-44-0). Authors include: Norbert Schwontkowski, Rainer Ganahl, Eva Schmidt, Tracy Mackenna and Edwin Janssen. Visual material documenting research process was shown in Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst. ‘The Bremen Collection 2003’ was later published in the Monograph, ‘A Perfect Image of Ourselves’ and the project was further discussed with curator Horst Griese in an interview: 'What remains constant in each project is our role as temporary visitors', ‘Changing Habitats: Art Experience and Urban Development’ that was published in November 2005. dc.title.alternative: Niemand ist eine insel/No man is an island dc.description.sponsorship: British Council Mondriaan Foundation Hope Scott Trust Fine Art Research Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee coverage.spatial: GAK: Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst and city spaces, Bremen, 13th September - 26th October 2003 dc.contributor.other: Griese, Horst (curator) Schmidt, Eva Schmidt (curator) dc.format: 6 outfits dc.isbasedon: Exhibition catalogue - Niemand ist eine insel/No man is an island, 2004 Changing habitats: art experience and urban development, GAK Bremen, 2005
