Abstract
The environment has been an issue of international public concern for more than three decades. Trading is one of the most efficient methods of meeting the climate change challenge and our initial experiences have proved very positive. The second area where we think we can offer people a better choice and at the same time help mitigate some of the perceived effects of climate change is cleaner fuels. A third initiative is the development of a new form of fuel solar power. There is a growing momentum behind the establishment of emissions trading systems, both nationally and internationally. We have been particularly pleased to see the excellent progress made by the CBI and ACBE in putting forward proposals for a UK domestic emissions trading system, and believe that, with the right level of government support for putting the system into practice, the UK can be an international leader in this area.
