Abstract

Completing a PGCE Mathematics course and starting out as a secondary mathematics teacher in 1987 prompted me to reflect critically on my own experiences as a mathematics learner (having studied mathematics up to degree level). At the time, I had naively assumed that the mathematics I had already learnt, together with the pedagogical strategies I would learn on the PGCE course, would prepare me fully for the role of secondary school mathematics teacher. Luckily, I was prompted on the PGCE course to re-examine my own prior assumptions about mathematics, which led to two revelations in my thinking.
