The Unconscious

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingEntry for encyclopedia/dictionary

Abstract

This short lexicon entry on the unconscious will selectively sketch the landmarks of the Freudian/Lacanian unconscious. It will focus on desire and the field of signifiers that supports it. Lacan calls this “the field of the Other.” It will treat the unconscious as a spatial and a linguistic phenomenon. It will conclude by arguing that the unconscious and ethics are linked in psychoanalytic thought.
