Abstract
The 11th conference of the European Academy of Design (EAD) took place on April 21-24th, 2015, at Paris Descartes University Institute of Psychology in Boulogne Billancourt, near Paris (France).
The title of this conference, The Value of Design Research, seemed timely. Many sectors of the industry worldwide have begun to understand the value of design for innovation, but what of the value of design research? Characterizing the value of design research is an essential step towards its development as a discipline. Today, design research is carried out in universities, in engineering schools and in design schools. Design researchers work in laboratories with practitioners, psychologists, ergonomists, sociologists, management scientists, and others. How does design research draw value from these disciplines, and generate value of its own?
We received 362 abstracts from 38 countries, with 220 accepted papers addressing these four questions. The 11 best papers in this special issue were selected during the reviewing process by the Track Chairs and The Design Journal editorial board with the objective of representing both the variety of the topics and the geographical spread of EAD community.
In this special issue we have structured the debate on the concept of value, choosing to explore four distinctive facets of the value of design research, namely 'excellence',
'organizations', 'society' and 'measurement'.
