Abstract

This piece of research was the development of imagery for the illustration of a book on the life and work of Frank Lloyd Wright. The project aimed to develop a cohesive visual language capable of describing subjects ranging in scale from the vast to the tiny, and modes ranging from the technical to the emotive.
This work was commissioned as the first architecture title in Laurence King’s ‘This is…’ series. The series explores the relationship between the life and work of significant creative practitioners utilising a highly visual approach and a light tone. An extensive, drawing based investigation into the work of Lloyd Wright informed the development of the drawing style and combination of digital and physical processes. Previous findings and approaches were challenged and built upon. Volner’s writing was analysed in order to inform the drawing and ensure a match of tone. Conventions of pictorial depth and drawing systems were combined, interchanged and subverted in order to achieve the communicative objectives of each image whilst establishing a playful feel for the book as a whole. A large range of archival materials were used in the pictorial reconstruction of key Lloyd-Wright buildings and accurate historic costume and detail.
The book was published by Laurence King and widely available in major book retailers. It won a Deutsches Architekturmuseum Architectural Book Award and has been translated into Chinese simplified (PRC), Chinese complex (Taiwan), Spanish and Turkish.
