N1 - This research project questions the place of the clock in contemporary society and examines how time can be transformed from a purely functional mechanism to something which plays with people’s perception of time, generating meaning in an entertaining manner while retaining the accuracy of its function as a timepiece. Public space is used as the setting to explore this question using moving image as the expression of time. Flack’s specific contribution to the research was the exploration of techniques to translate the concept into the finished product. The innovative use of software was key to the development of the clock. The unique use of vector based template mattes was paramount to not only accommodate the created content footage but also support an accurate timing device that could be locked up to any time zone worldwide. Since the second iteration of 'Time Piece' was exhibited as part of the 'Tik Tak Tok' exhibition at the Visual Research Centre, Dundee Contemporary Arts (15 February - 8 March 2002). Executive members of Scottish Enterprise Tayside were inspired by the 'Time Piece' concepts exhibited and in February 2007 commissioned 'Time Piece 3' to reflect the spirit of innovation, creativity and enterprise of the city of Dundee. The clock was installed in June 2007 and is projected across 1.5 metres on the facing wall within the main reception of the recently completed Scottish Enterprise Building in Dundee. The latest iteration was commissioned by the Institute of Directors (IoD) in Scotland after their executive had viewed the SET clock. 'Time Piece 4' was designed to represent the theme of creativity in industry at the IoD annual conference (2 November 2007). The clock is designed around the IoD logo and incorporates the use of animation, depicting blood flow visualisation.
