Abstract
Toadstools is a group exhibition curated by Steven Brown at Helen’s Costume, Portland, Oregon (26 October – 1 December 2024). Erica Eyres exhibits an oil painting on linen, titled Brunette. Her methodology involves the collection of source imagery from cosmetology and dermatology books that feature extreme close-up photographs women’s faces and the backs of anonymous women’s heads. Eyres selects, scans, closely-crops and edits these photographs, and paints them using realist techniques. The resulting painting instigatse an extreme sense of closeness to the subject, who remains anonymous, and presents a moment from an incomplete narrative that becomes psychologically charged.
The exhibition brings together a group of artists who have previously been included in the gallery programme and explores themes around mysticism and the figure of the toadstool
