Abstract
The University of Dundee manages a diverse collection of trees across its estate, including the ornamental arboretum at the Botanic Garden and shelter belts at Riverside Sports Ground. As a major landowner, the University encourages public access, resulting in frequent interaction between people and the tree resource. This Tree Management System (TMS) is designed to ensure that the University's approach to tree management remains up-to-date, accurate, and responsive. It provides a structured framework that aligns with Scottish and European legislation, industry best practices, and the University's commitment to conservation, public safety, and landscape enhancement. This Tree Management System (TMS) aligns with Scottish and European legislation while also supporting the University of Dundee’s commitment to tree conservation, visitor experience, and landscape enhancement. The first Tree Management System (TMS) published in January 2020 was the first formally documented process, and during the past 5 years the sites trees have been externally assessed on the main campus and Botanic Garden. This document formalises the management approach, ensuring that tree-related risks are addressed proportionately, in line with research that suggests tree failure risks are generally low (Ball & Watt, 2012).
