Abstract

This presentation introduces and contextualises Multi-Component Outputs (MCOs) within the framework of practice research and the UK's Research Excellence Framework (REF). It draws from a sector-wide review of practice-based research submissions, including the University of Dundee’s REF2021 experience and feedback from panel chairs. The session aims to demystify MCOs, illuminate the value of Practice Research Portfolios, and promote the adoption of the "Research Dimensions" framework as a tool to articulate research processes clearly and accessibly.

Designed to support researchers—particularly in Art & Design and Humanities—the presentation includes practical examples, discussion prompts, and templates. It encourages openness and standardisation in presenting non-traditional research outputs, contributing to institutional preparation for REF2029 and broader open research goals.
