    Abstract

    Dates: 28 May – 22 August 2021
Venue: The Herbert Gallery & Museum, Coventry, UK

For the exhibition UnNatural History, curated by Invisible Dust as part of Coventry UK City of Culture 2021, Tania Kovats presented a group of newly commissioned works responding to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum’s Natural Science collection. The artworks draw on personal materials, film, and taxidermy, and were displayed alongside collections and contemporary artworks exploring natural history and human relationships with the natural world.

    Artworks exhibited:

    hiber nation 20/21 (2020–2021)
A digital film made in collaboration with Benjamin Wigley. The work documents objects from Kovats’ personal natural history collection and domestic environment during the winter of 2020–21, and was commissioned specifically for UnNatural History.

    Badger 20/21 (2021)
A taxidermied badger preserved in the position in which it was found as roadside roadkill. The work was created in response to the Herbert’s Natural Science collection and commissioned by Invisible Dust for the exhibition.

    Crow (2021)
A taxidermied crow, also preserved in the position in which it was found. Shown as part of Kovats’ new works for UnNatural History, and commissioned by Invisible Dust in 2021.

    The space between 8 and 18 (2021)
A display case installation consisting of school shoes worn by the artist’s son between the ages of eight and eighteen. The shoes are arranged as a series, referencing museum display practices and natural history collections.

Together, these works formed Kovats’ contribution to UnNatural History, which featured newly commissioned responses to natural science collections by selected international artists at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum
