N2 - The Dundee Wee Forests initiative, led by the University of Dundee Botanic Garden, exemplifies the integration of green spaces into urban environments to enhance mental and physical health. This project is part of a broader network including the Dundee Green Health Partnership, which aims to motivate community engagement with local green spaces. Originating in 2019 and involving multiple stakeholders, the initiative focuses on planting small native woodland areas in deprived city wards, in alignment with the Miyawaki method for rapid ecological restoration. These Wee Forests contribute to biodiversity, air quality, and soil health, while serving educational and community-building functions. The initiative aligns with Scottish Government climate and biodiversity goals, providing nature-based solutions for social and environmental issues. Early results indicate positive impacts on community amenity and ecological health, with ongoing citizen science efforts to monitor these developments. The project fosters social cohesion and environmental awareness, positioning Dundee as part of an international network dedicated to urban ecological restoration.
