This, the first of a two part article, explains the pressures for the reform of the law relating to transsexuals in the UK. Examines the provisions of the Gender Recognition Act 2004 relating to gender recognition certificates, marriage including forbidden degrees, parenthood, inheritance under a will or succession to a title, criminal offences, disclosure of information and privacy, and discrimination by sports bodies. © 2011 Sweet & Maxwell
