    Abstract

    For students from a disadvantaged background, coming to university can be a daunting experience as they feel out of place and that they do not merit a place at University, quite simply their confidence is low. At the University of Dundee we have developed, alongside Dundee and Angus College, associate and co-curriculum programmes that allow students to spend one day a week alongside the main level one cohort studying a module, while during the rest of the week, students are studying for their HNC at the College. Provided the students
    pass both the HNC and for the co-curriculum, their University theory modules, they secure a place in Level two of the Life Science degree programmes. By experiencing University for one day a week, college students are more likely to make the transition to University when attending full time.
