Abstract
Writers Are Not Strangers is an interactive novella originally written as part of a creative-critical PhD thesis. It seeks to explore the relationship between readers and writers (and players) by confronting players with their choices, and withholding player agency at key moments in favour of character agency. Writers Are Not Strangers contains not just multiple endings but multiple beginnings and offers something different in subsequent re-readings through a mixture of randomisation and adapting to reader-player choices. This combination of the literary with structural and computational techniques drawn from videogames makes it a relevant addition to the ELC.
