Abstract
The 5-person show curated by Luke Skiffington celebrates approaches to drawing transient faces and figures.
Artists: Brian Biggs, Colette Lilley, Clark Keatley, Brian Mountford, Alex Roberts.
“Taking its title from the 1969 song Duchess by Scott Walker, this exhibition presents five distinctive approaches to drawing focused on depictions of the face and figure. The exhibition presents a series of drawings that explore faces in transition, capturing identities that are not fixed. Developed from diverse processes, including grids as a way of transcribing information, working from life or adapting found imagery. Surfaces are built from marks that accumulate and dissolve, suggesting faces in a state of flux or multiple possibilities rather than a single, stable likeness”. 50 MV
50 MV is an artist-run gallery and studio space located in Mersey View just a short walk from the iconic Anthony Gormley installation on Crosby Beach. Founded and curated by artist Luke Skiffington in 2022, it regularly hosts contemporary art exhibitions, including group shows of paper-based art, sculpture, and painting.
Roberts’s invited participation contributed by diversifying the exploratory range of curated figural studies as the only artist to exhibit artworks beyond tonal use alone. Two painted artworks on transparent paper, Pout and Leopard II - New Journeys, 2026 utilise intense colour to capture and disperse the fleeting suggestion of a persona and lived experience. Allowing identity, painted gesture and encounter to surface in shifting ways. Impacting a non-verbal meeting that quietly shapes how we understand one another.
