Abstract
This story map was created using visual data collected with young refugees in Jordan and Uganda in 2017, and explores transitions to adulthood affected by protracted crises: long-term, extended periods of conflict and war, meaning young people and their families are growing up while displaced from their homes for many years, even lifetimes.
The story map remains an important testament to participants' lives in 2017, and to ongoing experiences of protracted crises across Africa and the Middle East in 2026. Data and statistics are as the original document – please see the UNHCR website for the latest figures on continuing displacement across these sites.
In 2017, some 600 million young people living in conflict-affected areas across the globe. There remains a pressing need to understand how youth are affected by displacement and the implications of severe disruption to life courses for the construction of pathways into adulthood.
