In the first part the European Union's proposed Water Framework Directive and its recent amendments will be examined. Its main features and possible impacts will be highlighted. In the second part, the English & Welsh and German systems will be analysed and examined, detailed data, facts and figures will be delivered. Possible ommissions and changes of these two systems will be discussed. The reader will get an idea what the Water Framework Directive requires and where Germany and England stand. At the end the question, whether or not the Water Framework Directive is a cornerstone with regard to careful and sustainable usage of the probably most under-valued natural resource - water, will be answered
