Read Me This data set was produced as part of the BESIDE research project at the University of Dundee. This work was supported by the RCUK Lifelong Health and Wellbeing Programme grant number EP/K037293/1 - BESiDE: The Built Environment for Social Inclusion in the Digital Economy. Authors: Dr. Lesley J Mcintyre and Mr. Ian Harrison Data Set Contents: Method Statement (Pdf format) The method statement describes how the dataset was created. It provides the detail to enable the reader to understand the research process and make assessment of the validity, reliability, and transferability of the data. Code Books (Pdf format) The code books document contains definitions of all terms used in categorizing the data. Scanned copies of original observation (Pdf format) Scans of the original observation notes include all original sketches and diagrammatic plans made by researchers in the field. Data Tables (Tables set is in xlsx format) Table 1 – Observation Summary This set of tables provides a count of the observations in the data set. It includes a count of the space types, start times, day types and activity types observed Table 2 – Site Information The table contains information relating to the home as a whole. Site - Letter assigned to site for use during the study Care Type - Nursing or Residential Building Type - Retrofit or purpose Built Home type - Single or Multi Unit Average living group size - A mean average of the residents’ living group size across all units within the home involved in the study. No of residents - Number of residents within the home Floor areas - Floor areas are measured from provided floor plans and recorded in square meters. Communal Space - Includes sitting, recreational, and dining space. Residents' external space - Secure external space accessible to residents. Circulation space accessible to residents - spaces for walking in. not including fire stairs when they are secured except in times of alarm or back of house circulation areas. Floors - total number of floors within building and within square brackets the number of those floors which are accessible to residents. Deprivation Classification of Neighbourhood SIMD 2012 decile The postcode of the home was used to retrieve the relative rank of the output area for Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. The position of the output area within the nation is represented by its decile. 1 being the 10% most deprived areas of the country. http://www.gov.scot/Topics/Statistics/SIMD [EIMD 2015] When the home was located in england the equivalent measure is included; however, it is noted that these are not directly comparable. They give relative indications of levels of deprivation. An english value is denoted by use of square brackets around the number. https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/english-indices-of-deprivation-2015 http://imd-by-postcode.opendatacommunities.org Urban / Rural The Scottish Government 6-fold Urban Rural Classification was used to describe the built-environment context of the care home. For homes in scotland this was looked up using their postcode for homes in england this was calculated following the published methodology. 1 Large Urban Areas - Settlements of 125,000 or more people. 2 Other Urban Areas - Settlements of 10,000 to 124,999 people. 3 Accessible Small Towns - Settlements of 3,000 to 9,999 people and within 30 minutes drive of a settlement of 10,000 or more. 4 Remote Small Towns - Settlements of 3,000 to 9,999 people and within 30 minutes drive of a settlement of 10,000 or more. 5 Accessible Rural - Areas with a population of less than 3,000 people, and with a drive time of over 30 minutes to a settlement of 10,000 or more. 6 Remote Rural - Areas with a population of less than 3,000 people, and with a drive time of over 30 minutes to a settlement of 10,000 or more. http://www.gov.scot/Topics/Statistics/About/Methodology/UrbanRuralClassification Table 3 – Spaces This table contains information categorising each public or semi public space within the home Site - The letter used within the study to identify the home in which the space is found. Space- A assigned identifier for the space for use within the study. Reference - A formatted combination of the site and space identifiers this is how the space is referred to on the observation table. Super Type - A high level categorization of space type - see code book Space Type - A categorisation of space type - see code book Area - Floor area if the space in m2 Number of Access Points -When recorded this identifies the number of entries/ exits from space, including fire exits and access to storage rooms but not including boarded up doors, service hatches or windows. Table 4 – Observations This table contains the detail recorded at the time of observation and the categories applied to the observation during the analysis process. Some content is created by cross referencing from other tables and is presented alongside the observation details for ease of reference Sheet - The identifier used within the study to reference any particular observation this is one letter followed by three digits. The letter identifiers which research carried out the original observation. Site - Letter referring to care home where observation took place Space - Space reference number for the primary space interactions occur in. combined site space code - the combination of site and space number which can be used to reference the space across the study. Space type - cross reference from table 2 spaces Space Category - cross reference from table 2 spaces Date - The date the observation was made Day type - calculated from the date this identifies weekdays from weekend days. Start time - time observation started Finish Time - Time observation ended A: Activity - Goal/intent driven action(s). What is the objective or intent behind Interaction(s)? Activity Live codes - Transcription of activity(s) identified at the time recording observation. Activity Reflective Codes - Non-mutually exclusive coding applied through iterative process of analysis - see code book. Level 1 / Parent Group Activity Reflective Codes - cross reference from code book W: Well Being - 'Which opportunities for improving resident wellbeing (ways to wellbeing) are being supported/inhibited? Ways to wellbeing live codes - Transcription of way(s) to well being identified at the time of recording observation - see code book. Ways to wellbeing reflective codes - Non-mutually exclusive coding applied through iterative process of analysis - see code book. E: Environment - What environmental factors are affecting activity? Spatial / Environmental Analysis Environment Excerpt - Reflective text transcribed from observation notes. Environmental Factors Reflective Codes - Non-mutually exclusive coding applied through iterative process of analysis - see code book. Level 1 / Parent Environmental Factors Reflective Codes - - cross reference from code book Iou : Interactions, objects and users - Exchanges that happen between people, spaces, building elements or things. Interaction Excerpt - Descriptive text transcribed from observation notes. Uses # to highlight object mentions and @ to highlight references to users. @ is used as shorthand to designate user in interaction excerpts. @1 meaning first user within an excerpt , @2 meaning user 2 etc. 2@ meaning two users. User codes are used with square brackets[] after the @ symbol to define user groups - see code book Users - Lists of users present populated by original observer during transcription based on field notes. See code book. Table 4 – Activity Codings This table records the application of categories to excerpts during the analysis process. Coder - first name identifies the researchers who applied the code Sheet Reference - Identifies the observation the code is applied to Activity Code - Code applied to the observation - see code book for definitions Level 1 Group - Cross reference from code book Table 5 – Well being Codings This table records the application of categories to excerpts during the analysis process. Coder - identifies the source of the code either single researcher or joint coding Sheet Reference - Identifies the observation the code is applied to Wellbeing Code - Code applied to the observation - see code book for definitions Table 6 – Environment Codings This table records the application of categories to excerpts during the analysis process. Coder - identifies the source of the code either single researcher or joint coding Sheet Reference - Identifies the observation the code is applied to Environment Code - Code applied to the observation - see code book for definitions Level 1 Group - Cross reference from code book Notes - Notes recorded at time of code application.
